Retinoids are skincare products that claim to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, increase collagen into the skin, treat acne and enhance overall skin texture. Retinoids include tretinoin and retinol. These two ingredients are used to treat many skin concerns. While they both are different forms of Vitamin A, they both have different properties and have different effects on the skin. Whereas, on the other hand, retinol is a milder form of Vitamin A. Retinol first undergo conversion into its active form which is called retinoic acid, within the skin to exert its effects. This conversion of retinol makes it less potent than tretinoin, it also makes it less irritating, making it more suitable for the people who have sensitive skin or those who are new to retinoids. When it comes to effectiveness than tretinoin is on top. Many studies have showed its efficacy in improving acne, minimizing wrinkles and maximizing overall skin texture and tone. In contrast, Retinol’s effectiveness is limited by its conversion process and has lower potency. While retinol make good results with consistent use.

Tretinoin is very potent and more investigated retinoid. Tretinoin irritates the skin so it is prescription medication. While retinol is less potent so it is over the counter product. Due to more potency tretinoin should be used under the supervision of medical staff. The patient must build tolerance for the tretinoin product. A new tretinoin formulation is there in the market with the name of ALTRENO which causes less skin irritation almost 1% of patients in clinical trials. Retinol is less potent and less irritating so it is widely present in many skin care products and formulations.

Additionally, it is important to consider formulation and concentration of the product. Starting with the lower concentration and gradually increasing concentration, frequency and potency can help to reduce adverse effects while still achieving desired results. It is also impossible to use sunscreen daily while using tretinoin or retinol, as both can cause increase skin sensitivity to UV radiation.
