The dried seed known as ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) is a popular spice around the world. In Latin, this spice is called carum copticum. The term is often referred to as Nankhah or Zenyan in medieval Persian medical and pharmaceutical manuscripts. For thousands of years, Ajwain has been recognized as a traditional Persian medication in both Ayurveda and Unani.

In addition to carbohydrates, fat, fiber, volatile oils, glycosides, protein, phenolic compounds, saponins, and minerals, this plant contains a wide array of bioactive compounds. In Ayurveda, ajwain extract is called “Admoda Arka.”. Vaidya gurus attribute its ethnopharmacological benefits to coughs, colds, pains, headaches, heartburn, asthma, diarrhea, painful menstruation, cholera, stomach discomfort, and smooth respiratory functioning.

The herb has been used in modern medicine for bronchodilation, cardiac stimulation, carminatives, digestion stimulants, diuretics, galactagogues, hypo-glycemic, anti-inflammatory, antiflatulent, analgesics, antimicrobials, antihypertensives, and antifilarials. Both nutrition and medicine can benefit from its bioactive compounds [1].

  • Ajwain has a high fiber content, with 100 grams providing 39 grams of dietary fibre, so it aids digestion and prevents bloating. 
  • There is some evidence that ajwain may be helpful in treating respiratory conditions such as asthma and bronchitis.

In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, carom seeds are commonly used to treat digestive problems. Researchers have found that carom seed extract may be effective in treating peptic ulcers.Ibuprofen-induced stomach ulcers were improved by carom seed extract in a two-week rat study [2].

According to the study, the extract had similar effects to a common peptic ulcer medication.The extract of carom seed may also be beneficial in treating chronic indigestion and preventing gas. Consistent abdominal discomfort and pain are symptoms of indigestion. Indigestion is thought to be caused by delayed stomach emptying.

It has been shown that carom seed spice accelerates food passage through the stomach in rats, which may improve digestion. Despite this, human studies have yet to prove this .

Carom Seeds (Ajwain) Composition

Traditional medicine and diet both use carom seeds in India and eastern Asia. Fiber makes up 11.9%, carbohydrates account for 38.6%, tannins, glycosides, moisture makes up 8.9%, protein makes up 15.4%, fat makes up 18.1%, saponins are present, and flavonoids are present in 7.1%. 

Blood Pressure Regulation

It has been reported that thymol, a major component of carom seeds, may reduce blood pressure by blocking calcium channels.Carom seed extract has been shown to reduce blood pressure levels in rats.

However, research on carom seeds’ ability to lower blood pressure is still limited. There is still a need for further research to understand how the seeds may affect blood pressure in humans.

The nutritional benefits of ajwain include preventing fat accumulation and promoting weight loss. Thymol, an essential oil in it, also helps boost metabolism. The first step to losing weight is to improve your metabolism.

Ajwain seeds are soaked overnight in 250 ml of water. Mix a teaspoon of honey into the glass of water the following morning. Water should be consumed every day on an empty stomach. In conjunction with this, you should follow a strict low carb diet for at least three months in order to lose weight.

Promotes Respiratory Health 

Respiratory problems can be effectively treated with ajwain seeds. Toxins are kept away from the lungs and pharynx by consuming the seeds. In addition to helping people with respiratory problems breathe better, ajwain water relaxes the air passages.

Coughing may be relieved by carom seeds, according to some evidence.

There is limited research on carom seeds, but one guinea pig study found that they caused less coughing than codeine, a common cough medicine.As well as improving airflow to the lungs, carom seeds may also have anti-inflammatory properties.The carom seed extract increased airflow to the lungs 30 to 180 minutes after administration of 0.057 to 0.122 ml of carom seed extract per pound (0.125 to 0.25 ml per kilogram) of body weight.Compared to theophylline, a commonly prescribed asthma medication, the effect was similar.

Human coughing and other respiratory symptoms can be improved with further research on carom seeds.
