Marine Vs Bovine Collagen: Who Works Best?

Porcine collagen is sourced from pigs and bovine collagen from cows. Many cosmetics use it because it is cheaper to extract.  Bovine collagen allergies are estimated to affect 3% of people, but porcine collagen allergies are less prevalent because it is more similar to human collagen.

Cold water fish, usually salmon, are used to extract marine collagen. There is a 1.5-fold increase in bioavailability of fish collagen compared to bovine or porcine collagen. In comparison with other types of collagen, its particle size is smaller. Skin Healing and Anti-aging: 

Pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries can benefit from marine organisms’ bioactive substances. There is a high level of Type I collagen in wild caught marine collagen, which accounts for close to 90% of its composition. As it’s responsible for giving skin its structure, it’s generally considered the best type for skin and beauty health.  

Helps Alleviate Osteoarthritis Symptoms

In osteoarthritis, your bones’ protective cartilage disintegrates, resulting in the symptoms of arthritis. Bovine collagen may relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis. Hands, knees, and hips are among the parts of the body that may be affected by it. It has been found that bovine collagen increases bone mineralization and bone formation in mouse cells, which may be beneficial to osteoarthritis patients.

Researchers found improvement in symptoms in 30 people with osteoarthritis of the knee after taking 5 grams of bovine collagen twice a day for 13 weeks. The use of collagen peptides for osteoarthritis management and joint health maintenance has been suggested in some studies.[2]

What is the Recommended Amount Of Collagen? 

The safe amount of collagen adults can consume per day is between 2.5 and 15 grams. The amount of nutrients in your supplement can be found on the label. Daily collagen powder is taken by many people in the amount of 1-2 tablespoons.

Marine and Bovine Collagen for Healthy Bones

Herbal extracts, for example, can interact with commonly prescribed medications, and some supplements are unsafe for pregnant or nursing women. Furthermore, collagen supplements may also contain high doses of biotin, which can interfere with thyroid and heart tests. If you take high doses of these and other vitamins and minerals for a long time, you may experience health problems.

In spite of this, it is important to read labels and understand the potential risks of collagen supplements that contain other ingredients than collagen. Be sure to consult a healthcare professional before starting a supplement if you are taking other medications or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

When Should You Take Your Collagen Supplement?


A collagen supplement’s timing depends on the reason for taking it. In the morning, blend these supplements into your smoothies or coffee if you have experienced gas or digestive issues with these supplements. Take it at night with milk if you want a good night’s sleep.

Conclusion 

Both Bovine and Marine collagen are effective anti-aging agents and are beneficial to support bone health. Bioavailability of fish collagen (marine collagen) is approximately 1.5 times better than that of bovine collagen or porcine collagen.
